Australia’s richest art prize has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organisers of the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize said this year’s event won’t go ahead given widespread coronavirus-induced lockdowns. Entries were scheduled to open in July.

The Doug Moran also doubles as the world’s richest portrait prize. Winners are awarded $150,000, with finalists each receiving $1000.

Previous winners include artists Ben Quilty, Tim Storrier, Esther Erlich and the Archibald Prize-winning painter Fiona Lowry. Only Australian artists or residents are eligible to enter as the aim of the prize is to promote contemporary, local portraiture.
