Italian opera singers Roberto Aronica and Veronica Simeoni, who play the leads in the Australian Opera production of Carmen, know the perils of playing the parts of the ill-fated lovers in Georges Bizet’s classic.

The tenor and mezzo-soprano met in 2012 while performing at Italy’s Macerata Opera Festival – playing the roles of Don Jose, the soldier seduced by the feisty femme fatale Carmen. They have been a couple ever since.

Eight years on, the two Rome-born singers who live, work and travel together, will make their Australian debuts in the John Bell production at the Sydney Opera House this Saturday.

“We love to sing together because we can take our confidence as a couple on stage,” Ms Simeoni said.
