Netflix will make a feature film about Jessica Watson, who at 16 became the youngest person ever to sail around the world solo and unassisted when she cruised into Sydney Harbour in May 2010, 210 days after she had departed.
The film will be produced for the streaming giant by Sydney-based Sunstar Entertainment, a talent management company that counts Watson among its major clients. The company – which also had a hand in bringing Saroo Brierley’s story to the screen in Lion – has already told Watson’s story in documentary form, in 2010’s 210 Days: Around the World With Jessica Watson, and has been attempting to get a feature version made since at least 2014.
“True Spirit has been Sunstar’s passion project,” said producer Andrew Fraser. “We have waited a long time for the stars to align and for us to feel comfortable that the right ingredients were present to do justice to Jessica’s achievement. Our partnership with Netflix will ensure Jessica’s epic story is shared with a global audience, as it deserves to be.”
Watson is on board as a consultant to make sure the technical details are accurate, but if the producers need to take some liberties in the name of drama she’s OK with that.
