A giant fish could soon be appearing in Kirkcudbright.

Local sculptor Alex Flett is developing plans for the piece, which is likely to be around nine foot long.

And he is hopeful it could lead to more sculptures popping up around the town.

He said: “Hopefully it comes off and kicks off the idea of a sculpture walk to add to the history of the Artists’ Town.

“We held international festivals in 2004 and 2007 so because of that connection we could attract artists who have already been to Kirkcudbright – and if we have international sculptors involved it is easier to attract sponsorship.”

Alex, who lives just outside the town, had originally hoped to put the sculpture in place near the bridge which crosses the River Dee.

However, due to a number of issues arising it now looks set to be a fish out of water.

He said: “If you put it in the river you need to get permission from Crown Estates but if you put it on land you don’t.

“It’s now either going to go on land upstream of the bridge or on the area opposite the swimming pool near St Cuthbert’s football ground.

“The community council is behind it however it shapes up.”
