With theatres closing overnight and many in the arts industries struggling, Noviello was frustrated. “We were the first to get shuttered, and we’re the last to get any support,” he says. “I was racking my brain thinking, what can I do to help the industry get back on its feet?”

Having run a Pozible crowd-funding campaign to finish post-production on the Martyn Park-directed Spencer, one of the most popular rewards for donating were free tickets to cabaret night An Evening With Adam Noviello. Hosted by beloved queer bookshop Hares & Hyenas, it was intended for supporters’ eyes only – but Park recorded it for posterity.

Noviello has decided to stream the two-act performance on YouTube with a GoFundMe donation link to support the Victorian Actors’ Benevolent Trust. “They’re a well-loved non-profit organisation that’s there to help performers when they’ve hit hard times, and obviously they’re run off their feet right now.”

The show features original songs, career highlights from the musicals Matilda and Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, and his favourite song by Australian legend Peter Allen, ‘Quiet Please, There’s a Lady on Stage’. Accompanied by musical director Stephanie Lewendon-Lowe on piano, Australian Idol finalist Cle Morgan (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and Andy Johnston (Priscilla) join as special guests.

“So many people came together to help my film project, so to be able to use that now to hopefully give back to the industry that’s been so generous to me, in a time that it really needs it, feels wonderful,” Noviello says. “If all I achieve out of this is providing some entertainment for people to help take their troubles away watching cabaret, that’s fine too, but if they’re able to donate anything at all, large or small, we’ll be super-grateful.”
