FACES OF OUR ORCHESTRAS – FINALE ★★★★1/2
Melbourne Digital Concert Hall, May 8
Melbourne’s three professional orchestras (Melbourne Symphony, Orchestra Victoria and Melbourne Chamber Orchestra) feature the elite athletes of the city’s classical music scene. After years of training they now struggle to make a living. But their evident talent has been reinforced by the week-long “Faces of Our Orchestras” series at MDCH.
Memorable moments among the consistently fine performances included Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet with David Thomas (MSO), two Beethoven cello sonatas from Rohan de Korte (MSO), and programs with players of all three orchestras: of double bass music and of violin works by Beethoven, Bach and Brahms. Contemporary music came from a Plexzus concert.
