Arts council announces winners of student exhibition

The Pocono Arts Council has announced the winning entries in the 26th annual Juried Student Exhibition. An artists’ reception and awards ceremony was held on Jan. 24.

The show featured work by 53 students representing: Clear Run Intermediate School, East Stroudsburg Senior High School-North, East Stroudsburg Senior High School-South, J.T. Lambert Intermediate School, Notre Dame High School, Pleasant Valley High School, Pocono Mountain East High School, Pocono Mountain West High School, Swiftwater Elementary Center as well as three homeschool students.

The exhibition included works in 2D, 3D (sculpture/non-functional), fine crafts (functional) and photography. Mediums represented include acrylic, ceramics, clay, collage, digital, fused glass, mixed media, pastel, photography, watercolor, oil, pen and ink, and pencil.

Students receiving awards:

Best in Show: Ciana Taylor, Pocono Mountain East High School.

2D Works: Madeline Shaefer, Pleasant Valley High School, first place; Shylan Healy, Pleasant Valley High School, second place; and Claire Toomey, Notre Dame Junior/Senior High School, third place.

3D Works – Fine Crafts: Owen James, Pleasant Valley High School, first place.

3D Works – Sculptural/Non-functional: Sarah Tartaglia, Pleasant Valley High School, first place.

Honorable Mentions: Piper “Duckie” Clifford, Pleasant Valley High School; Josephine Cucullo, East Stroudsburg High School-North; Ang Dow, Pocono Mountain East High School; Ryan Anderson, Pleasant Valley High School.

Junior Division: Harrison DePaoli, Swiftwater Elementary Center, first place; Xavier Garcia, Clear Run Intermediate School, second place; Gianna Morris, Swiftwater Elementary Center, third place.

Honorable Mentions: London Stephens, Swiftwater Elementary Center; Taylor Werkheiser, J.T. Lambert Intermediate School.

Jurors for the show were Stephen J. Washington, artist and educator, with a background in fine art, photography, and clay; and Marcia Flammonde, portrait artist.

Award sponsors were: William and Patricia Hibschman; The Pocono Chapter, PA Guild of Craftsmen; Pennsylvania Bar Association Foundation; and Paul Laukaitis (in memory of Norbert Scanlan). Also, support from NEPA Credit Union, Pleasant Valley’s National Art Honor Society and Swiftwater Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization. This event was made possible by ongoing support from Monroe County Commissioners.
