While there’s no perfect formula for creating successful film-to-TV adaptations, some shows manage to nail the transition.
One such program is What We Do in the Shadows, a New Zealand comedy based on Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s 2017 film of the same name, and it’s this week’s buzziest show on The Televisionaries podcast.
The show is a comedy-horror mockumentary featuring four vampires who live together and are being followed by a documentary crew as they go about their lives. Season two has just started on Foxtel and, according to podcast host Louise Rugendyke, it’s just about the most fun you’ll find after dark right now.
On the podcast, Rugendyke is joined by Green Guide and The Guide critic Debi Enker and Spectrum Melbourne deputy editor Kylie Northover. In discussing the success of What We Do in the Shadows, another question arises: what makes a good film-to-TV adaptation?
